What is CNC plasma?

In simple terms let’s explain what CNC plasma cutting is: plasma cutting uses electricity to turn air into plasma, the fourth matter (coming after solid, liquid and gas) which is then blown through the metal to make the cut.

Plasma cutting is a high speed, highly precise way of cutting metal (aluminium, nickel alloys, copper, titanium, steel and stainless steel) which is typically a low cost operation, becoming increasingly popular within industries wishing to cut back on outsourcing metal profiling. It’s an operation that saves time and money whilst generally taking up very little floor space. Needing only a compressed air supply and AC power to operate, a CNC plasma cutting machine is an achievable and realistic workshop addition.

Plasma cutting has always been innovative but it was propelled into a different league with the introduction of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technology in the late 1980’s.

The addition of CNC to plasma cutting gives the machines greater flexibility to cut a varied range of shapes. A detailed set of instructions entered into the machines numerical control means the days of manually guiding the cut are over.  CNC plasma cutting software directs and controls the plasma cutting torch and does so with the highest levels of speed and accuracy.

The Pros of CNC Plasma Cutting

  • It’s precise – with the Computer Numerical Control function, CNC plasma cutting is the most precise and accurate plasma cutting form available.
  • It’s faster – by programming your cut from start to finish, there has never been a quicker way to cut precisely.
  • It’s adaptable – set the CNC to cut a variety of different metals to a variety of different thicknesses.
  • It’s safer – with no flame or flammable gasses, it’s the safest way to cut metal.
